These two mermaid sculptures adorned the big rock on the north end of Bondi at Ben Buckler and were installed in 1960. Their perch is now known as Mermaid Rock. The mermaids were created by local artist Lyall Randolph and were modelled on Jan Carmody (Miss Australia Surf 1959) and Lynette Whillier (1956 Olympic swimmer).

Heavy seas in 1974 claimed one of the mermaids and the sculpture was never recovered. The other lost an arm and tail, and her remains are on display today in Waverley Library, which was the inspiration for this painting.
