While I painted this piece, I was unaware that the reference image was a photo of the Sly Brothers, who were a well-known fishing family from Manly. Apparently, they completed many rescues and were later commissioned to protect bathers by keeping watch off the beach during bathing hours.
I love the formal clothing they wore, which is what drew me to this image.
