I was very moved by this epitaph in the Waverley Cemetery believing it a grave of a young boy. As a mother, I felt deep sadness while painting it as I thought about the mother’s loss of her young boy.
Recently I revisited the grave, to discover it’s the grave of a woman who died in 1913 – a wife and mother. She lived in the Hawkesbury. I’m curious about the location of her grave and the statue chosen. Perhaps it’s because she’s buried next to her son, who died before her at age 30.
