This Sydney icon claimed the lives of sixteen men during its eight years in construction. This painting is a tribute to those lives lost. The photo of the background, which inspired this painting, is well-known, and I believe was taken in 1930. However, it is documented that the two arms of the bridge finally connected in 1930, so I think the photo would have been closer to 1929. Other photos of men working on the bridge (without any apparent safety gear) inspired the ghostly foreground and ghostly bridge.
